Broadband Speed Test

01/08/2019 – 4:33 pm |

How to use our broadband speed checker

For the most accurate results, you should use a cable to connect your computer to your router before running the test. If you need to test wirelessly, then position yourself as close to your router as possible.

You should also make sure that nothing else is using your internet connection, or running on your computer, while performing the test.

What do the broadband speed test results show?

The tool measures the response time, or latency, of your broadband connection, as well as your download and upload speeds.

The response time, measured in milliseconds (ms), shows how quickly you get a response after you’ve sent out a request. More responsive connections – indicated with a low number – are necessary for applications where timing is everything, such as interactive video games.

The download speed shows the rate at which data is transferred from the internet to your device, while the upload speed shows the reverse – the rate that data is transferred from your device to the internet. Download speeds are usually of more interest, as most tasks require you to download information.

It’s important to note that the speed test results only represent a snapshot of your broadband connection at the time of testing. So to build an accurate picture, we would suggest you run several tests during a single week, in peak usage time (between 8pm and 10pm) and during off-peak times.

The results also only show the speeds you’re getting on the device you’re using for the test – the speed your provider is delivering to your house may be higher, especially if you’re performing the test wirelessly at some distance from your router.

Broadband News Update…

28/08/2019 – 12:18 pm |

Dear all,

No doubt some of you are wondering if any progress has been made with our Connecting Whitford Fibre Broadband Project.

The answer to that question is “Yes” however its been slow and somewhat complex. I have been in contact by phone and email to managers from Openreach, Connecting Devon and Somerset and The Department for Culture Media and Sport.

There have been various communication problems, order issues and other factors which have slowed the process down considerably. However…. THERE IS LIGHT AT THE END OF THE TUNNEL (or fibre optic cable!)

During my most recent telephone conversation with Matt Holmes from Openreach, he gave me assurance that the delayed order would now be passed to the Department for Culture Media and Sport. and marked as “High Priority”. At this present time, DCMS require additional information from Openreach and this part of the process has slowed down the progress of our application . This part of the process is now out of our hands, as internal communication between Openreach and DCMS continues.

I do hope that this information has put you in the picture and I will update you with additional details or further developments as soon as I recieve them.

Update 13th September 2019.

It has come to my attention and with no surprise that the Gigaclear contracts for Devon and Somerset have now been terminated. (Click here to see the full article.) Whilst this is very good news for our village working closely with Openreach, it is uncertain for other areas in the parish that are awaiting for Gigaclear connections to become live. I am in discussion with Matt Barrow from Connecting Devon and Somerset to obtain further detailed information so that this can be conveyed to the parish council and residents affected by the delays. I have also spoken to Matt Holmes from Openreach, and i can confirm that the project application is progressing well and i should have further information by the end of next week to share with you all.

Please do not hesitate to contact me either by email or phone if you have any questions or concerns.

Kind regards,

Matthew Wallace (Project Co-ordinator)
