Important Update

Connecting Whitford Broadband Project

News Update

A big thank you to all the community residents and businesses who have signed up to the broadband project during 2019, as without your support, this would not have happened. As you know we have successfully achieved a major part of our goal in bringing an improved broadband service to our community.  Initially we required 69 properties, but this was later downgraded to 52 after some re-evaluation by Openreach and DCMS.

The legally binding contract between Connecting Whitford (on behalf of the community) and Openreach was signed by myself on the 28th October 2019.

What has happened since?

Since the 28th October 2019, Openreach have been busy designing and planning for the delivery of our new fibre broadband infrastructure. This included computer-generated plans and ground/site surveys in the area. Also, some residents may have received an email or letter from Openreach requesting wayleave access to their property and contractual arrangements. This process has taken some time, but things are now beginning to move forward positively to the next stage.

Moving Forward over the coming months….

Openreach are now starting the initial works and checks for the build phase of the project. Some minor disruption will take place over the coming months with roadworks and traffic management in place.  This minor disruption is to be expected, so that Openreach can safely access and work on the existing infrastructure below and above ground. Work has already started up at Mount Hill to check capacity and to add additional fibre capacity if required.

From February or March, the main build phase will commence within the village boundary. This will involve laying new fibre cables above and below ground to each property that has signed up to the project. Community members who have not signed up or have not been allocated a voucher by DCMS will be eligible to upgrade in their own time when is suits them.

Openreach has up until the 28th October 2020 to build and activate the new fibre service in our community, however this is expected to happen during July or August 2020, which is very good news!

Keeping you Updated!

Unfortunately, this project has been unable to generate any income to offset a variety of ongoing expenses. Therefore, due to the ongoing administrational running and promotional material costs of this project, I have had to make the difficult decision to begin the process of dissolving the legal entity company Connecting Whitford C.I.C.

Future  updates to the project and to residents WILL ONLY be made via the village website: www.whitfordeastdevon.org.uk ,

or via Facebook, https://www.facebook.com/WhitfordCFP . You are also welcome to contact me on telephone number (01297) 441348. All other communication channels such as; (email address broadband@connectingwhitford.org,  the Connecting Whitford main website and the Twitter business social media feed  will be closing with  immediate effect.  The ongoing running costs have now continued mounting over many months and my personal savings injected into this project have now depleted to minus zero. (The company bank account is now overdrawn and is incurring daily interest charges.) and with no revenue or income stream to offset this debt the decision has been taken to close the company down.

Openreach will continue to deliver this project and you will shortly see work being carried out in and around the village. Do feel able to contact me on the above telephone number if you have any questions or concerns.

I have enjoyed spear-heading this project which is well on its way to final completion and success. A special thanks must go to the members of my Connecting Whitford team who have been willing, supportive and enthusiastic throughout the time we have been working together.

Thank you all for your continued interest and support.

Kind regards,

Matthew Wallace,

Connecting Whitford C.I.C. Project Manager/Company Director.

Broadband Speed Test

01/08/2019 – 4:33 pm |

How to use our broadband speed checker

For the most accurate results, you should use a cable to connect your computer to your router before running the test. If you need to test wirelessly, then position yourself as close to your router as possible.

You should also make sure that nothing else is using your internet connection, or running on your computer, while performing the test.

What do the broadband speed test results show?

The tool measures the response time, or latency, of your broadband connection, as well as your download and upload speeds.

The response time, measured in milliseconds (ms), shows how quickly you get a response after you’ve sent out a request. More responsive connections – indicated with a low number – are necessary for applications where timing is everything, such as interactive video games.

The download speed shows the rate at which data is transferred from the internet to your device, while the upload speed shows the reverse – the rate that data is transferred from your device to the internet. Download speeds are usually of more interest, as most tasks require you to download information.

It’s important to note that the speed test results only represent a snapshot of your broadband connection at the time of testing. So to build an accurate picture, we would suggest you run several tests during a single week, in peak usage time (between 8pm and 10pm) and during off-peak times.

The results also only show the speeds you’re getting on the device you’re using for the test – the speed your provider is delivering to your house may be higher, especially if you’re performing the test wirelessly at some distance from your router.
